3 Principles to Live By When Setting Marketing Goals

By | April 22, 2016

A good marketing strategy and plan is key for the growth of any business. But before developing a marketing plan for your business, its critical to have the right mindset about marketing. These are three principles and mindsets that we believe every business should start with and keep along their marketing journey.

Stop doing what everyone else is doing

Often times when businesses start taking their marketing strategy more seriously, they begin looking at what everyone else in the industry is doing. It feels like a safe bet, but I can assure you that if you follow suit to what every other marketer and advertiser is doing it can take you down a treacherous road. Do you really know if what they are doing is working? This can also lead to a common syndrome where your marketing looks like everyone else’s but with a different logo.

Fashion designer and entrepreneur, Coco Chanel, once said, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

If you want your business to be irreplaceable and to stand out in everyone’s mind, then you need to start thinking out of the box when it comes to your business’s marketing.

Commit

So often I see businesses try something once and then give up completely on marketing. Marketing has never been a ‘one and done’ process, and if it takes 7 impressions for people to become aware of your business, then repeated effort is necessary. In order to succeed it may mean being patient and persistent to make sure you have given something enough time before you change tactics.

Results are rarely overnight, but often people give up before the fruit ripens. In order to bear harvest it takes time for your investments to grow.

Track your results

When it comes to marketing, there is nothing more important than tracking your results and measuring your effectiveness. When people report they don’t receive any leads from their site I ask a question: “Do you ask the leads you get how they found you?” Too many times people don’t even track the answer to this simple question.

Put your best foot forward

Your business needs to come up with valuable marketing goals and a solid marketing strategy. But none of this can be done until you first have the right mindset and lay down some fundamental principles. When you as a company can agree to be unique, commit to a plan, and track your results, then you can bet on a strong marketing strategy with results.
